The concert itself was held at Melbourne's vast new Crown Casino, a very impressive complex of cinemas, bars, restaurants and conference rooms. Kellie Smythe did 5 songs in all, then we were treated to a very nice meal and a rather indifferent comic - Johnny Garfield, billed as 'Australia's leading Comedian'.
Then the moment most of us had been waiting for - The Seekers came on to an enthusiastic welcome and started with the best Live version of 'Someday, One Day' that I've heard. The audience were still chattering a little and dinner was being cleared during the next two songs, 'Red Rubber Ball' and 'Love is Kind', but some intrepid folks started dancing to 'When The Stars begin to fall', for which they were congratulated by Keith!
Many more joined them on the dance floor for a spirited rendition of 'Myra', featuring Judith's famous dance plus the sound of Calypso drums, which really complimented the song.
Athol's toy train signaled the start of 'Morning Town Ride', which had the audience singing along with gusto. The Gospel Medley kept up the lively pace and it was clear to all that the group were really enjoying themselves at this concert!
Bruce's 'I Am Australian' was received rapturously with most of the audience now on the dance floor, waving their arms in unison to the rousing anthem.
'I'll Never Find Another You' followed, again the best live version I've heard, with some nice guitar licks from Keith. 'Georgy Girl' and a wonderful rendition of 'The Carnival Is Over' closed the set, with 'A World Of Our Own' as the rousing encore.
As the group turned to leave the stage, they were called back by the host to be presented with a painting entitled 'Australia's living legends'
The concert was over, but an auction followed, including that of a signed 'Future Road' tour programme, which raised $1300! Altogether, nearly $200,000 was raised by the show.
